Grateful

"It's so clear that you have to cherish everyone."
~ Alice Walker

Our free download this month, Grateful (in honor of Thanksgiving, of course), is off our new release, Family Values (full album available here). It is a celebration of gratitude and all it implies and ignites. I hope you'll share it with the people you love.

Something extra special about this song is that we made it with the musical help of our children, the source of our deepest gratitude. Jasper's on trombone, Jonathan's playing bells, Silas adds trumpet, Sophia sings, and all the kids plus Sophia's friend Lilian make up The Grateful Choir. I know you are all out there feeling extra grateful for your kids during this holiday season. We are so lucky to have in our lives these beings, teachers, and reminders of what really matters!

Gratitude: The Value
"Gratitude" is a very profound word and concept, and one well worth diving into and exploring with the people in your life. When I ask the kids in my day camps what they think it means to be "grateful", the most common response I get is "happy". And while they're on the right track and feelings of happiness certainly can coincide with gratitude, we know that true gratitude encompasses more than just happiness.

Grateful lyrics
what makes you twinkle
what makes you shine
what makes you sing out
what makes you chime
what makes you celebrate
what makes you resonate
what makes you grateful
to be alive?

is it the meadow
where the sun shines sweet
so that you can run in it
in your bare feet

is it the puddles that
the rain cries down
so that you can stomp in ?em
all around the town

I'm grateful for the sun and the rain
(you try!)
I'm grateful for the sun and the rain
(everybody!)
I'm grateful for the sun and the rain

what makes you twinkle
what makes you shine
what makes you sing out
what makes you chime
what makes you celebrate
what makes you resonate
what makes you grateful
to be alive?

is it your school
where you run and play
and grow up just a little bit
each and every day

is it your home
with its roof in the sky
and windows so you can
watch the world go by

I'm grateful for my school and my home
(you sing!)
I'm grateful for my school and my home
(all together!)
I'm grateful for my school and my home

is it your friend
who you love all the time
'cause you can hear the music
in each other's minds

is it your family
who holds you strong
and always makes a place for you
your whole life long

I'm grateful for my friends and family
(you sing!)
I'm grateful for my friends and family
(everybody!)
I'm grateful for my friends and family
(that's you all! here we go...)

what makes you twinkle
what makes you shine
what makes you sing out
what makes you chime
what makes you celebrate
what makes you resonate
what makes you grateful
to be alive?

Being grateful has to do with the noticing, acknowledgement, and calling out of the situation, creature or experience that is engendering this feeling of happiness in us. Tying the feeling of happiness back to source closes the loop, completes the circle, and brings a deeper awareness of the causation of joy.

And when we are feeling grateful because of the blessings we are so fortunate to receive in this life, there is always a flip-side: deliverance from some form of suffering, small or great. The shadow side of our reality is that not everyone has access to the same blessings we do. It is a good practice to remember that.

Here, then, is an opportunity to raise awareness in our children that there are those less fortunate than we are, and begin a conversation about potential ways we can lend a hand and share our bounty with those in need. No action in this realm is too small, and children, with their big hearts and open minds, are ready and willing to help.

We teach our children to say "please" and "thank you" and "you're welcome" so they have good manners and learn to show respect during interactions with their fellow humans. Taking it one step further and talking with them about gratitude is an opportunity to underline this respect at a deeper level.

After all, we don't just want to raise polite kids -- we want to raise compassionate kids. We want to raise grateful kids.

I hope this sing-along becomes a tool for you and your family to name and express your gratitude on a daily basis. Add your own verses, make a gratitude list, create art around the ideas that come up, find ways to help others. And please share this music all around.

I am grateful for YOU!
Charity

"People usually consider
walking on water
or in thin air a miracle.
But I think the real miracle
is not to walk either
on water or in thin air,
but to walk on earth.

Every day we are engaged in
a miracle which we don't even recognize:
a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves,
the black, curious eyes of a child --
our own two eyes.

All is a miracle."

~ Thich Nhat Hanh
